Landscape Photography, What to Consider
You have just done your first landscape shot, and you are disappointed that the results do not look as professional as other photographs you have seen of the same area. So what have I done wrong you ask yourself, but do not worry, all photographers ask themselves the very same question at some time. Obviously you cannot do a lot about the the scenery. But you will find there is very little guidance on the skills of landscape photography, and the art remains a mystery to many. Could it be as much due to luck as expertise.
Although it will always helps to have a breathtaking view to begin with, landscape photography is just as much an an art as is setting up a portrait or still life. You have to learn to make good use what you have when it comes to making the landscape work for you to make the pictures that you are aiming for.
First of all, remember the basics and always think with a mind of a professional photographer. You cannot move the scenery, but you can learn how to choose a scene to work with and where to apply the rules and techniques that you learn about while studying photography. You can move, the scenery cannot, so look for a way to employ composition techniques such as the rule of thirds. Always be aware of where your horizon line is, and observe how the elements of the frame combine to create diagonal lines. And remember, if the shot is not perfect, you can always move on and find other locations to capture the shot to show the location in all it’s beauty.
To get the photograph “just right” you must also take the time of day and the time of year into consideration. You will not achieve a beautiful night shot by shooting a sunset by arriving just as the last rays of the Sun disappear behind the mountains. If you are not familiar with the location, you need to listen to local weather forecast so that you can avoid the rain and other bad weather and be there when you can capture a perfect sky in the background. Local ardeners familiar with the area can also be useful to you in your quest. They should be able to let you know which weekend the autumn leaves will be at their most brilliant or which month is the best time to find a beautiful canvas of flowers on the hillside.
You also need to take colors and tones into consideration. Most photographers look for the spectacular colors of nature to make their photograph beautiful and give the pictures added sparkle. But you do need to learn how to use these colors to enhance and not distract from the lines of the pictures. In fact, if the colors are too intense, simplify things by cutting out color completely and shoot in black and white.
Photographing nature can create some of the best snapshots that you ever capture, and sometimes the animals might even give your photograph that little added extra.
Always prepare well to ensure that you make the most out of your time in your chosen location. Always be prepared for the unexpected so that you ready to get a surprise shot and capture the beauty of the moment. You will also be able to get mystifying photographs when you keep in mind the basic rules for photography and soon you will learn how to make some of your pictures come to life.
